As Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming prepares to run for the Triple Crown, Pennsylvania has a lot to be proud of with its own horse racing industry.

Pennsylvania’s Horse Race Development Fund has helped to create 23,000 jobs and $1.6 billion in annual economic activity in Pennsylvania. In all, 89 percent of monies from the fund are being spent right here at local businesses for goods and services. Pennsylvanians have received $2.3 billion in property tax relief since the law was passed in 2004 – and horse racing is helping drive this.  The average daily gross terminal revenue generated from slot machine gaming by the six casinos that host horse racing was 16 percent higher on race days in 2015.

The industry also prepares life for our horses after their racing days over. With the understanding that most racehorses retire around age 7, the Pennsylvania Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association has created the nonprofit New Start program. Our program partners with foster farms to place retired racehorses in safe, loving homes. The program has found homes for more than 400 horses since 2013, with 35 so far this year.

There’s nothing more rewarding for New Start than to find new homes for such special horses. Will your home be next? For more information on the New Start for Horses program, visit its website at www.newstartforhorses.com.
